Christine Marie Whalen

Sydney Mines Christine Marie Whalen died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Miners Memorial Manor in her 90th year. Christine had been a resident of the manor for the past seven years. Christine was born in Beaver Cove in 1918 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Flora (MacNeil) MacMullin. Christine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will long be remembered by family and friends for her quiet demeanour. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception parish. She was active in the CWL and renowned for her baking skills. She was a seamstress and taught adult classes in that discipline. Surviving Christine is her son, Liam (Pamela), Halifax; daughters, Margaret (Alfred) LeJeune, Grantham, New Hampshire, and Kathleen (Chris) Parsons, Oakton, Va. She will be sadly missed by nine grandchildren, Tony, Danielle, Christine, Jennifer, Brenan, Jared, Kealan, Evan and Maggie and two great-grandchildren, Tanis and Titus. Also survived by brother, Michael MacMullin; sisters, Johnanna MacKinnon, Theresa MacKinnon, all of Beaver Cove, and Josephine MacNeil, Halifax. Christine was predeceased by her husband, Tony in 2001, six children in infancy and daughter, Geraldine Whalen in 2002. Also predeceased by sisters, Catherine Nearie, Margaret Collins, Elizabeth MacMullin, Mary MacNeil, Rita Goss, Eileen MacMullin, Stephanie Gallant, sister-in-law, Sr. Rode Concepta Whalen and brother-in-law, Joseph Whalen. Visitation, Wednesday, July 9, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Francis Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass to be celebrated Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of choice. The Whalen family would like to thank the staff of Miners Memorial Manor for the excellent care given to their mother while she was a resident and thanks to Dr. Doug Kohlsmith. A special thank you to Betty and Norman Pye, Sherrie Lynn Stewart and Bev LeBlanc whose kindness and support will never be forgotten. We would especially like to acknowledge the lifelong dedication of two nephews, Peter MacNeil and Blaine MacKinnon.
