Gert MacNeil

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Gert MacNeil, on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of James and Jessie (Gillis) McNeil. Gert was a graduate of Nova Scotia Teachers College and taught in the local area her entire career. Gert was an active member of St. John’s Parish and was also involved in many community service organizations including St. Vincent de Paul Society, CWL, Each One Teach One, Glace Bay Citizens Service League and St. Joseph’s Hospital board of directors. She is survived by her devoted husband, John H. MacNeil; daughters, Johnna (John) Nickelo, Dominion, Jessie (Grant) Pearson, Burlington, Ont.; and sons, Cameron (Kathy Gouthro) and Kim (Patricia); grandchildren, Katie and Christy Nickelo, Stuart, Cameron and Elizabeth Pearson, Jessie and John MacNeil and Mitchell and Coady MacNeil. She is also survived by her sister, Annie Kennedy, New Waterford. Gert was predeceased by sisters, Belle, Floss, Kate and Millie and brothers, Mike, Bernie, John G., Sime and Francis. In keeping with Gert’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay, Saturday, at 11 a.m. with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Interment to follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Memorials may be made to hospice/palliative care or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
