82, Florence Vernon Robert Geddes, 82, of Florence, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Robert and Susan (Cave) Geddes. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. Vernon was an avid sportsman, and a licensed guide. He was also an accomplished breeder of both racing pigeons and purebred beagles, holding multiple Maritime and Canadian records. A lover of harness racing, he was a member of the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Association, where his horses ran out of Sydney, Inverness and Truro raceway. He is survived by his wife, Mona (Shinners) Geddes, Florence; his daughter, Joanne (Jim) MacDonald, Ottawa; and his son, Lowell (Cathy) Geddes, Saint John, N.B. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer and Robbie; his sisters, Ruby Walsh, Sydney Mines; and Marigold (Ed) Spence, Springhill, N.S.; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his brothers, Andrew, Eric and Richard, and his sisters, Ellen, Evelyn and Olive. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Vernon Geddes will be held Monday, July 14, 2008, at 11 a.m., in Wilson United Church, Florence, with Norma Mills officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Bras d’Or Seniors and Pensioners Club. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.
