Nov. 13, 1942-July 11, 2008 Florence With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Scully on July 11, 2008, at the home of his caregiver, Gloria Bonnar, 398 Main St., Florence, with whom he resided. Born and raised in Florence, he was the only child of the late Hubert and Annie Scullen. He was a member of St. Stephen’s parish, where he became an altar boy at an early age. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 83, Florence. He worked as a seaman on the Great Lakes for 37 years, serving on the Algonquin and in later years on the Halifax, until his retirement in 2001 due to illness. Scully was an avid baseball player. He excelled at the sport and loved playing dearly for years, starting with Little League. His love of horses and horse racing could not be surpassed. He followed it until his passing. Scully will be greatly missed by Gloria and her family, who became a second family to him. He is survived by a godson, Jamie Taylor and a large number of cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by both sets of grandparents. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place Monday, July 14, 2008, at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, Florence, with Fr. Reg Currie officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the mass at the Florence legion. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.
