It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden death of a loving wife and mother, a wonderful daughter and sister, Margaret Jean MacEachern-Curran, age 45, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan, July 7, 2008, of breast cancer. She will be deeply missed by her husband, Michael Curran; her four and a half year old son, Ryan, and her two stepchildren, Colleen and Sean. Her Mom and Dad and her three sisters are also profoundly saddened by her passing. Born and raised in Sydney, N.S., she was the oldest daughter of Harvey and Clare (Gillis) MacEachern. She attended St. Joseph’s School and graduated from Sydney Academy in 1981. She attended Carleton University upon receiving the President’s Scholarship Award and graduated with her bachelor of arts degree. After completing a bachelor of education degree at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ont., Margaret Jean taught in the Ontario school system for 15 years. In her last few years in Ontario, Margaret Jean served as a school administrator in several schools in the Toronto Catholic School Board. Margaret Jean was always very active in her community serving on church boards and school co-op programs for her son, Ryan. Margaret Jean is survived by a large and loving family of Gillises, MacEacherns and Currans. She will always be remembered by her three sisters, Dr. Shauna (Larry Babineau), Ottawa, Elizabeth RN (Neil Ferguson), Halifax and Lora LLB (Chris Daly), Halifax. Margaret Jean loved her nephews and nieces including Maria and Nolan Babineau, Jonathan and Hillary Ferguson as well as Alexandra and twins, Dan and Bridget Daly. The family will have a memorial mass to celebrate Margaret Jean’s life at St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney on Friday, July 18 at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Margaret Jean may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Margaret Jean will be remembered for her deep sense of family, her terrific zest for living life to the fullest, her sociable and friendly personality, her love of learning and adventuresome spirit, her appreciation of her Scottish heritage and her Cape Breton roots, her flair for debating current issues, especially politics. Above all, she will be remembered for her deep love for her young son, Ryan, who was never far from her side. She would always want him to know how difficult it was for her to part from him.
