Gerald 'Gerry' Miller

Gerald ‘Gerry’, Miller, 68, passed away peacefully at home holding hands with his wife, Dianne on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, after a courageous battle with ALS. Born in Stellarton, he was the eldest son of the late Augusta ‘Gussie’ (Kelly) and Ernest J. Miller. He was a devote altar boy at Our Lady of Lourdes and proud to carry on the tradition of his faith. In later years as he served on many parish councils, sang in the church choirs and was a reader and lay distributor. As a young boy growing up in Stellarton, Gerry took responsibilities very seriously. As a young lad, he began his career working at Arrow Printers while taking correspondence courses with the Alexander Hamilton Institute. He worked for a short time with the Sherbrooke Daily Record in Sherbrooke, Que. before accepting a position with Maritime Tel & Tel. This was a stepping stone to many positions which Gerry accepted over his 33 years of service (25 years with perfect attendance). He was a firm believer of doing a job well and giving it his best. Gerry retired as a regional director (Central and Northeastern Nova Scotia). Throughout his career, Gerry served on many advisory boards and willingly shared his ideas and talents. He spent the last several winters in Florida where he served on the board of directors in his community the last six of which as vice-president. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dianne (MacIsaac); daughters of whom he was extremely proud of their achievements and their marriages, Krista (Bernie) Cashin, Antigonish, Rochelle (Colin) Irving, London, Ont., Nancy (Stephen) Dugas, Halifax; proud grandfather of Jacob and Ian Cashin, Olivia and Hayden Irving, Grant Dugas; sisters, Audrey (Len) Cassidy, Oshawa, Ont., Patricia (Reg) Warren, London, Ont.; brothers, Jerome (Judy), Sutton, Ont., Dennis (Karen) Oshawa, Ont., Donnie (Joan), Winnipeg, Man., Kevin (Giselle), Ottawa, Ont.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie (Robert) Cullen. Gerry was known to be a gentleman of strong character, displaying honesty, integrity and good will in all his dealings. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. God bless. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 20 from 7-9 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. A funeral mass will be held Monday, July 21 at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince St., Truro. Cremation to follow. Interment at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lismore. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Michael Murray, Dr. Sean Christie, Dr. Ian Grant, Dr. David Henderson, Lisa Wilson, RN and the Palliative Care Staff at the hospital.
