DR. BERNARD E. NOWLAN

NOWLAN, DR. BERNARD E. - At his residence, July 28, 2003, Dr. Bernard Nowlan of Grand Falls passed away peacefully at the age of 74 years. He was married to the former Louise Dutil. Born in Ste Marie de Kent in 1929, he was a son of the late Henri and Irene (Gaudet) Nowlan. Dr. Nowlan received his Bachelor of Arts (Summa Cum Laude) from the Université Saint-Joseph in 1950. He received his Doctorate in Medicine (Cum Laude), LMCC from L'Université Laval in 1955. He was an Honorary life member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1980, a life member of the New Brunswick Medical Society, a member of the Grand Falls General Hospital Staff from 1955-2003, a member of the Medecins de langues française and a lifetime member of the Grand Falls Curling Club. In 1994, he was awarded the Garfield Moffatt Medal, for the exceptional quality of medical care that he unsparingly gave to his patients. In 2002, he was awarded a Doctorate in Health Sciences (Honoris Causa), by the Université de Moncton. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Michel Nowlan (Dyane) of Grand Falls, and Jean F. Nowlan P. Eng. (Kelley) of Halifax, one daughter Anne Marie Nowlan (Fran Maycock) of Haymarket, Virginia, two sisters, Geraldine and Louise Nowlan both of Newington, Connecticut, seven grandchildren, Marie-Andrée, Jean-François, Jennifer, Julie, Alexandre, Pierre-Luc and Maya, his brothers-in-law, Laurent (Marcienne), Raymond (Anita), his sisters-in-law Helene (Georges), Renée (André). He was predeceased by two brothers, Fernando Paul (Sarah), Norman (Rita), two sisters Grace Nowlan, Dolores Cormier (Azor), his father and mother-in-law Henri and Cecile Dutil, three brothers-in-law Henri A. (Françoise), André, Paul (Erna) and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Marcel), Line, Denise (John). Resting at O'Regan's Funeral Home, 515 Everard H. Daigle Blvd., Grand Falls with visiting hours Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4. His funeral will be held Thursday, July 31st at 4 p.m. from the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Grand Falls. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Friends of the Grand Falls Hospital, Regional Food Bank or Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
