JAMES MALCOLM MacGOWAN

MacGOWAN, JAMES MALCOLM, Q. C. - 65, Halifax, died suddenly at home on July 30, 2003. Born March 19, 1938 in Saint John, N. B., he was a son of the late James Malcolm MacGowan, Sr. and Edna Mildred (Hamilton) MacGowan. Jim graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 and from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1963. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar the same year. He was a Partner of Daley, Black & Moreira, Barristers & Solicitors of Halifax until his retirement from the firm in 1999. He continued a private law practice until the time of his death. He had been a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation; a lecturer at the Dalhousie Law School; a Council member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, having served on its Finance, Discipline, Unauthorized Practices, and Court Automation Committees; a Chairman of the Nova Scotia Elections Commission; a Vice-Chairman of the Nova Scotia Hospital Review Board; and a lecturer at various conferences on corporate, taxation, and environmental law. He was an Elder and a member of the Choir of Calvin Presbyterian Church. For many years, he was a Scout leader. He was an avid salmon fisherman, and a passionate family historian. He took special delight in spending time with his grandchildren and with his faithful friend Laddie. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marilyn (Crowe); four children, James (Tracy Potter), Halifax; John (Alisa Caswell), Fort McMurray, Alberta; Anne Marie (Pat Hergott), Calgary, Alberta; and Susan (Steve Wright), Ottawa; three grandchildren, Cormac Hergott, Madison MacGowan, and Olivia MacGowan; sisters Sandra Ellis, Westville and Elaine Fraser, Halifax; and brother David, Saint John. Visitation will take place at Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor St., Halifax, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, August 5. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 6 in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Ashburn Ave., Halifax, with Rev. Sydney McDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, on Thursday, August 7 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre Foundation or a charity of your choice.
