BEATTIE, IRA MacINTOSH - Professor Ira MacIntosh Beattie, P.Eng., FCSCE, FEIC, FIE (PAK) was born in 1924 in Nash Creek, New Brunswick, the son of William Allen Beattie of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Jessie Catherine MacIntosh of Rose Hill, South Tetagouche, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys (Barkhouse), and is survived by his daughter Patsy Beattie-Huggan, her husband Lyall Huggan of Charlottetown and; two sons, David and his wife Lori Lynch of Fredericton, and Donald of Montreal; three grandchildren, Tamara, Christopher and Kevin; companion Vivian MacMillan and several nieces, nephews and their children. Ira began his long relationship with the University of New Brunswick during the Second World War. He received a BSc in civil engineering in 1944 and later obtained an MS in civil engineering from Stanford University. He joined the civil engineering department of the Faculty of Engineering in 1945. Ira, together with Howard McFarlane, Robert McLaughlin and Albert Stevens were known as "The Four Engineers." They formed the nucleus of the expansion of the department during the post-war years. Ira took over as head of the department in 1957 and spent the rest of his career at UNB, teaching and conducting research until his retirement in 1984. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1985. A long-time supporter and friend of UNB, Ira was an active alumni member and volunteer at Homecoming 2000. His three children, Patsy, David and Donald, are all UNB graduates. Today, the Ira Beattie Discretionary Fund in Civil Engineering, which Ira began in 1997, is a testament to his commitment to his profession and to the university which he loved. Ira was active in professional organizations, and in business and community service. He was named a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and was president of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick. In 1945 he was a founding partner of what would eventually become the ADI Group, one of the most successful engineering companies in Atlantic Canada. Ira later entered municipal politics, becoming a Fredericton City Councillor from 1980 -1983. Following his retirement, he became involved in environmental advocacy, establishing Fredericton Recycling Inc. and serving as a member of the Environmental Review Board of the Fixed Link (Confederation Bridge). Proud of his Scottish heritage, Ira was an active genealogist and President of the Fredericton Society of St. Andrew. In recent years he spent considerable time renewing his roots in Northern New Brunswick, organizing a MacIntosh family reunion in 2001. Ira loved spending summers at Grand Lake and was an avid gardener. He was also an active member of the Rotary Club of Fredericton and the Garrison Club. His colleagues, friends and family will miss his warm smile, quick wit and good humour. Ira Beattie was 79 years old. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 11 at 2:00 pm in the Chancellor's Room of the Wu Centre at the University of New Brunswick. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Ira Beattie Discretionary Fund in Civil Engineering would be appreciated.
