HAZEN MAXWELL (MAX) RICHARDSON

RICHARDSON, HAZEN MAXWELL (MAX) - Hazen Maxwell (Max) Richardson passed away in Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on July 31, 2003 in his 80th year. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Pollard), one daughter, Kathie Wells (Robert), Ottawa, Ont; one son, George (Judy), Fredericton, N.B.; one grandchild, Alice Richardson, two sisters, Ruth (Hume), Portland, Me., and Mary Gene (Lee), Saint John, N.B.; one brother, Edwin Richardson (Jane), Ottawa, Ont.; half sister, Grace Gendron (Mark), two half brothers, Elmer Richardson (Joyce), St. Stephen, N.B.; Vance Richardson (Elizabeth), Nova Scotia; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, William Richardson. Max was born in 1924 in St. Stephen, N.B., the son of Hazen and Margaret (Forsyth) Richardson of Richardson, Deer Island, where he spent his early years. His fondest memories of childhood were times spent with his grandfather, master boatbuilder George Everett Richardson in his boatshop. This interest in boat building was to continue through his entire life and his retirement allowed him the time to use those skills for the design and construction of two wooden cabin cruisers. As a young man, Max travelled to Ontario where he worked in the steel mills and graduated from Central Technical College in Toronto as a bricklayer. In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in Fredericton and was sent overseas on the Aquatania, returning on the same vessel in 1946. Later that year he married Kathleen (Kaye) Pollard. Max worked for many years around the local area as a well-known masonry contractor. In 1973 he became maintenance supervisor for School District No. 23, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. In 1953 he joined Victoria Lodge No. 26 F&AM rising to the office of Worshipful Master in 1969. He went through all the chairs in all York Rite bodies, but one and was a founding member of the Luxor Temple AAONMS clown unit. In 1972 he was awarded the first emblem ever presented to a Noble for outstanding service. He was also a member of the Queen Mary Chapter No. 4 O.E.S. and he served as District Deputy Grand Master, District 5 of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New Brunswick. Max's retirement years were spent indulging his passions - boat building and outdoor activities such as snowmobiling around his camp in Canoose. He built two cabin cruisers - the 20' Alice K was launched in 1993 and the 28' Kathie A was launched in 2000. Declining health forced him to downscale his boat building activities, but he completed several large models, including the Bluenose, the Pauline, the Alma Connors and the Page. Most of these were boats originally built by his grandfather on Deer Island or by his uncle, Albion Richardson, of Blacks Harbour. Max had many, many friends and spent a great deal of his time in their company offering advice and assistance or just enjoying their friendship. His funeral service was held at the S.O. Mehan and Son Funeral in St. Stephen on Aug. 2, 2003 with Rev. Eric E. Caldwell officiating. Pallbearers were Leigh Waldron, Herbert Weatherby, Chester Hyslop and cousins Dick, Floyd and Dale Richardson. The eulogy was delivered by his long-time friend Leigh Waldron. Interment was at the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.
