Edward 'Ed' Joseph Peter Melnick

1950-2008 Glace Bay It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Edward Joseph Peter Melnick, age 58, of Stanley Street, Glace Bay. Ed passed away on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Planetta) Michalik. Ed was manager the Glace Bay KFC for 18 years. After the closure of KFC, he decided to return to school and received his Grade 12 diploma and also completed a PCW course. He graduated in 1997. After graduation, he began working at Victoria Haven Nursing Home. He was a former member of the militia. He loved to play and watch hockey and baseball. He had a great love of animals. He loved music and was an avid Elvis fan. He enjoyed his daily walks. Ed was a ‘jack of all trades’ and mastered them all. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Ed will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Eileen (Stevens); daughters, Melody (Darren) Varga, Glace Bay, Cherie (Todd) Chant, Westmount; brothers, Michael (Eileen) Melnick, Glace Bay, Jonk (Donna) Melnick, Alberta; stepbrother, Bernie (Jeannie) Michalik, Glace Bay; sisters, Maudish (Owen) McCarthy, Ont., Cathy (Donnie) Murrant, Glace Bay. Also surviving is mother-in-law, Anastasia Stevens, Glace Bay; two cherished grandchildren, Kenneth William Chant (8) and Tyler Edward Chant (4). Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Stash Melnick and father-in-law, Ernest Stevens. Visitation for Ed Melnick will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gary Dillon officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
