George Carruthers Tellum

It is with profound sorrow that Mrs. Peggy Tellum announces the passing of her beloved husband, George Carruthers Tellum, in QEII Health Sciences Centre on Sept. 4, 2008. Born in Joggins, Cumberland County, on July 20, 1921, he was the son of the late Josiah and Margaret (Carruthers) Tellum, who later moved to Sydney Mines, where George attended school. He graduated from Sydney Mines High School, where he was prominent in spots. With the outbreak of the Second World War, George and his friends enlisted with the 5th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, 3rd Division. They served in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. George possessed a great sense of humour and was famous for his ‘one-liners.’ Returning to Canada to civilian life, he was employed at the P.T. Edwards Naval Base Fire Department as fire chief, transferring to the Provincial Fire Marshal’s Office as deputy fire marshal until his retirement in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Peggy Arlenen Dessereau (Wayne), Cole Harbour; son, George (Marilyn), Antigonish; grandchildren, Chantal, Gillies, Craig, David; four great-grandchildren and 19 step grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Helen Kerr, sister, Doreen and son-in-law, Gillies Dessereau. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. Blake Caldwell officiating. Interment will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
