1921 - 2008 Sydney Mines Gordon Alexander MacLellan passed away peacefully on September 19, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on October 3, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Alice (Cox) MacLellan. A lifelong resident of Sydney Mines, Gordon spent his late teen years as a miner at Princess Colliery. After several years as a salesman for MacDonald’s Wholesale and Sydney Wholesale, he operated his own businesses. MacLellan’s Wholesale in Sydney Mines and MacLean’s Wholesale in New Waterford during the 1960s and 1970s. Later he served until his retirement, as the co-ordinator of the Neighbourhood Improvement (NIP) and the Residential Assistance (RAP) programs for the Town of Sydney Mines. As a young man, he was very active in swimming, baseball and basketball and coached school hockey and girls basketball teams. Gordon was a former president of the Cape Breton Shrine Club, a charter member of the Northside Kiwanis Golden K, a board member of the Kinsmen Day Care Centre, and a former vice-president of the Sydney Mines Seniors and Pensioners Club. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church. A faithful and avid supporter of his community, Gordon was active an member in many facets of government and politics. He is best remembered as the Mayor of Sydney Mines, serving two terms, 1967-1970 and 1971-1973. During his second term of office, he was also chairman of the Northside-Victoria Amalgamated School Board. Gordon is survived and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Marsha (Clifford) Smith, Sydney Mines and Thalia, Sydney; by sister, Adrienne (Neil) Patterson, Sydney Mines and brothers, Earle (Marjorie), Dartmouth and Dr. D. Lorne (Irene), Sydney Mines; three grandchildren, Troy (Julie) Smith, T.J. (Andrea) Smith, Fredericton, N.B. and Tasha (Douglas) Gallant, Bedford, N.S. and five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian Smith, Alex and Abby Gallant and Eric Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, Tillie (Snow); son, Paul and brothers, Clyde and Douglas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a committal service to be held at Brookside Cemetery, Halfway Road, Sydney Mines, Monday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m., Rev. Rick Barnes and Rev. R. Ritchie Robinson officiating. A reception will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Sydney Mines Seniors and Pensioners Club, 6 Fraser Ave., Sydney Mines. Donations may be made to either the Cancer Centre of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 1482 George St., Sydney, N.S., B1M 0A1 or to the Northside Civic Centre Archibald’s Wharf, North Sydney, Phone 794-3839.
