RONALD B. ROY
ROY, RONALD B. - The death of Ronald B. Roy of Rothesay, New Brunswick occurred on Sunday, December 21, 2003 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on August 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Annie (Goldman) and John Roy. Ron is survived by his wife Lynne and two daughters, Susan and her husband Ron Rampone of Kelowna, British Columbia and Linda Roy of Vaucluse, NSW, Australia. His is also survived by two grandsons Eric and Josh Rampone. Ron's family moved to England when he was a young child and it was here that he received his early education. He qualified with the Institute of Biomedical Science in 1945 and later when he moved to Canada, with the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists where he ultimately obtained the designation of Fellow of the CSLT. Ron had an extensive career in laboratory medicine commencing in England. In 1950 he emigrated to Canada when he was offered a position with the National Reference Laboratory of The Canadian Red Cross in Toronto. Two years later in 1952, he became the Technical Director of the Blood Bank and Rh Laboratory and Director of the Intravenous Team at the Toronto Western Hospital leaving that position in 1972 to become the Technical Director of Blood Bank Products Division at Connaught Laboratories. In 1975, he accepted a position at the Paul I. Hoxworth Blood Centre, as The Technical Director and Assistant Director of Laboratories and Assistant Professor in Research Surgery with the University of Cincinnati. Ron served as a Blood Grouping Consultant to the United States Consulate General. He was President of the Toronto Academy of the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists and served as the first President of the Ontario Antibody Club continuing as a council member with the OAC for several years. In 1978, Ron and Lynne moved to Saint John, where Ron was appointed Clinical Scientist in the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He continued in this position until his retirement in 1993. He was editor of the MLT Analyzer for the New Brunswick Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists from 1984 to 1997. He was an active member of the Standards and Editorial Committee for the Canadian Society of Transfusion Medicine and was Chairman of the Area Blood Services Committee for the Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Services. Ron was proprietor of his own publishing company (Write Word Publications) from 1987 until his death. Ron held membership in several professional societies including The Institute of Biomedical Science, The Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists, American Association of Blood Banks, International Society of Blood Transfusion, Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine and the British Blood Transfusion Society. He has numerous publications in such prestigious journals as Vox Sanguinis, Transfusion, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Canadian Medical Association Journal and many others. Outside his working career Ron enjoyed numerous hobbies and activities such as photography, golf, gardening, cooking and was also known for his love of animals especially Labrador Retrievers. Ron is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Mel Doris (Linda) of Prescott, Ontario and their four sons, Michael, Jim, John and Mark and Dr. Peter Doris (Dr. Jill McEwen) of White Rock, BC and their seven children, Andrew, Theresa, Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Jenna and Ryan. Ron is survived by his very special and caring cousin Mrs. Phyl Leigh of Thaxted, England as well as his long time friend and cousin Sam Goldman and Bob Goldman both of Leeds, England. Remembrances may be made to the dialysis unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital or to the charity of the donor's choice. A private ceremony was held at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row in Saint John, New Brunswick on December 24. A burial service will be held at a later date.
