James Earle Merchant
Born in St. John’s, Nfld., he was raised in Sydney, N.S., then attended St. Francis Xavier University and the University of Toronto; eventually returning to Newfoundland to teach. His retirement years were spent in P.E.I., where he passed away suddenly. An only child, he was predeceased by his parents, J. Oscar and Helen (Prendergast) Merchant. He will be missed and always remembered by many. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Oct. 6 in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, followed by interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
