M. DOROTHY STEEN
STEEN, M. DOROTHY - Dorothy (Estey) Steen slipped peacefully from this earth in the early morning hours of April 2, 2004, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following an illness. Dorothy was born in 1909 to Robert and Gertrude (Holmes) Estey of Redbank, NB, and was the oldest of thirteen children. She left home early in life to take a job at Ganong's chocolate factory in St. Stephen, then moved to Saint John to work as a practical nurse at the Provincial Hospital, where she met and married her fellow employee, Francis Steen. Shortly after their marriage, she left work to devote her life to raising a family: she had two children before the Second World War, and five afterwards. After the last of the children began school, Dorothy worked at various part time jobs in West Saint John, including several summers at the White House Lodge, and several years each at Harned's Clothing and Robichaud's Grocery. Dorothy was a completely other-directed person, and gave freely of her time collecting for charities. She was also an active member of Scout Mothers, the CWL, the Legion of Mary, and Saint Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, and, until increasing frailty overtook her at age 90, was very active in her church, serving as a sacristan for several years prior to 1999. Dorothy was predeceased by: her beloved husband Francis, her parents; six brothers - Austin, Burton, Carl, Earl, Loyal and Robert; three sisters - Frances Estey, Genevieve Watt, and Josephine Estey, three children - William, John and Joan Steen; two grandchildren - Mary Kyle Jodouin and Edward Kyle; and two great grandchildren - Neil Kyle and Corey Bérubé. She is survived by; three sisters - Kay Wetmore (Archie) of Welland, Ont., Loretta Estey of Quispamsis, NB, and Margaret Hogan (George) of Sunny Corner, NB; one son - Brian Steen (Betty) of Saint John; three daughters - Elizabeth Kyle (Raymond) of Calgary, AB, Mary Nöel (Thomas) of Saint John, and Patricia Driscoll (David) of Saint John; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and special family friend, O'Rida Savoie. It is with sorrow for ourselves, but joy for her, that we surrender Dorothy to the arms of God. Public visitation will be on Monday, April 5, 2004 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home on 309 Lancaster Avenue (634-1701). The funeral mass will be at 2pm on Tuesday, April 6 at Our Lady of the Assumption, with interment to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Fallsview Reception Centre. Donations made to the NB Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society, or any charity of the donor's choice would be truly appreciated.
