PORTER, GERTRUDE A. - Mrs. Russell B. (Gertrude) Porter passed away peacefully, to be forever with her Saviour and Lord, on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at Pro Tem, her most recent home, 2166 Mountain Road, Moncton, NB. She was predeceased by her beloved and devoted husband of 62 years, Russell B. Porter. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Lowe (Late George) of Moncton, Mrs. Joan Steeves (William) of Saint John NB, Mrs. Marsha Frans (Richard) of Greenville, S.C., ten grandchildren, Joanne Lowe of Hamilton, ON., Brian Lowe (Kathy) of Toronto, Sarah Lowe of Moncton, Stephen Steeves (Lynn) of Hartsville, S.C., Daniel Steeves (Cindy) of Simpsonville, S.C., Carolyn Campbell (Phillip) of Fort McMurray AB., Charla Szweda (David) of Lawrenceville, GA., Joel Frans (Wendy) and Kara Frans of Greenville, S.C. and Luke Frans of Washington, D.C., sisters-in-law, Marion Porter (Late Burl) of Moncton and Beulah Newcomb of Vancouver, two nieces, Barbara White (Gordon) of Corona, CA. and Elizabeth Anonby (John) of Langley, BC., two nephews, Eldon Newcomb (Isabel) of Toronto and Audley Newcomb (Sandy) of Prince George, BC., several cousins, including special cousins Alden Woodworth (Ola) of Hopewell Hill, she also leaves behind ten great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Russell B. Porter in 1999, a son-in-law, George Lowe in 2002, and a brother, George E. Newcomb in 2004. Born in Saint John, NB. August 14, 1912, to Frederick J. and Annie B. (Logan) Newcomb, she attended schools in Saint John and in Hopewell Hill, NB, before graduating from Saint John Vocational School and subsequently, the Saint John School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She also received additional post graduate training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and practiced nursing for a short period of time before the arrival of her first child. She resided most of her married life in Moncton, having moved there from Albert, NB. She was a committed, dedicated and uncompromising Christian and an Independent Baptist by conviction. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, having been associated with that congregation for 46 years. Aside from her devotion to her husband and family, she was passionate in her love for Christ and His church. She was a student of the Scriptures and a voracious reader of good Christian books and literature. When she could no longer attend church services because of ill health, she continued to look forward to visits from members of the congregation to keep her up to date. For many years, she and her husband enjoyed the winters of the Florida Gulf Coast. They were also able to take several trips abroad, one of the highlights of which was a group tour of the Holy Land. Visitation is at Tuttle Bros. Funeral Home, 171 Lutz St. Moncton on Friday, April 23, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 1:30 pm with Pastor T. Friesen officiating. Donations in Gertrude Porter's memory can be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice. Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery.
