IDA MARY CULLIGAN

CULLIGAN, IDA MARY - Of Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex and formerly of Jacquet River, N.B. passed away on April 27, 2004. Born in Jacquet River, NB on April 22, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mary Ann (Shea) Culligan. Ida graduated from Normal School/Teacher's College, Fredericton, NB in 1929. She taught in South Tetagouche her first year and in Jacquet River until 1941 when she accepted a clerical position with the Inspection Board of the United Kingdom and Canada in Ottawa and later at the Ammunition Depot in Renous, NB until 1946 when she returned home to care for her ailing parents and to operate the NB Telephone Company switchboard which was installed in the family home in the early 1900's and remained until the change over to the dial system in the 50's. During this time she was an Agent for Fairweather Insurance, Saint John, NB and taught an English Literature class at the Ursuline Convent. In 1956 she returned to teaching full time in Jacquet River and in 1960 accepted a position in Campbellton until retirement in 1971. She was a member of the New Brunswick Retired Teacher's Association, St. Gabriels Catholic Women and a volunteer for numerous charities. She was the last surviving member of her family, predeceased by four brothers, Alfred, Sanford, Leslie and Ralph and three sisters Rita, Ethel and Eileen. She leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews. Her remains will rest at St. Gabriels funeral parlor, Jacquet River, Friday from 1 until 2:45. Her funeral service will be held from St. Gabriels Church, Jacquet River, Friday afternoon at 3pm.
