GEORGE SAMUEL BECKETT
BECKETT, GEORGE SAMUEL - Our family announces the death of our dear brother George who we loved and admired so much occurred on May 31, 2004 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. George Beckett was a blessed man. Born in 1922 in New Jerusalem, oldest son of Edwin and Mildred (Machum) Beckett, George was born with a rare disease known as osteogenesis imperfecta, or 'brittle bones' disease. Up to the age of 21, George suffered over 200 fractures which resulted in his small stature, but George was schooled at home by his mother and first learned to repair shoes and boots for the men working at his father's farm and mill. George later taught himself how to repair watches, and after moving to Bloomfield in 1954, George became known far and wide for his watch and clock repair skills. George often gave testimony as to how he enjoyed his life and had told a friend that he wouldn't have had it any other way. George was a devout Christian and an active member of the Lake Baptist Church in New Jerusalem and later the Central Norton United Baptist Church in Bloomfield. George was very involved in church committees and particularly enjoyed working with youth groups. George was so faithful and loved picking up children for Daily Vacation Bible School and youth meetings, as well as picking up seniors for church on Sunday mornings. George was also an avid hunter and musician, getting a deer each fall and learning to play the mandolin, violin, banjo and harmonica. George taught his siblings how to play the guitar and enjoyed playing music with his friends in the community and at church. George lived a full and blessed life and maintained his independence almost until the age of 80. George had a great spirit and was respected and admired for his independence, faithfulness, steadfastness and truth. George Beckett was truly an inspiration to all who met him. And finally, after 82 years, George has shed his broken body and flown away into the arms of Jesus. He is survived by two sisters Evelyn Anderson and Ruby Laird (James) of Hampton; one brother Donald E. Beckett (Eleanor) of Martinon; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Edith Doherty, Dorothy Beckett, infant sister Greta Beckett and brother Colin Beckett. Resting at Reid's Funeral Home (832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton. The funeral will be held Thursday, 11:00am, at Central Norton United Baptist Church, Bloomfield, with Rev. Mark Leary officiating. Interment in Brown's Flat Baptist Cemetery at 3:00pm. Memorials to Central Norton United Baptist Church would be appreciated. Visiting 7-9pm Tuesday and 2-4pm & 7-9pm Wednesday. Online condolences and donations may be made at: www.reidsfh.com
