J. AUDREY McLAUGHLAN
McLAUGHLAN, J. AUDREY - J. Audrey McLaughlan, 87, Grand Falls, passed away peacefully June 6, 2004, in the Veteran's Wing of the Grand Falls Manor. He was the eldest son of John F. and Margaret (Sullivan) McLaughlan. He was born, grew up, went to school and worked and lived his life, except for the wartime years, in Grand Falls. He attended Radio School in Saint John in 1940, following which he served in Canada's Merchant Navy as a Radio Officer and experienced 11 crossings of the Atlantic during 1941 and 42. In 1942 he joined RAF Ferry Command, serving as Radio Officer onboard American built Transport and Bomber aircraft being ferried from the US to theatres of battle in Africa, Europe and the Far East. During his service in Ferry Command he flew 57 round trip missions across the Atlantic, and Ferry Command is today recognized as having pioneered the commercial air routes that now exist. Following the war he started a Radio and later TV Repair business in Grand Falls, and serviced the area all through the 50's, 60's and 70's. He was a Ham Radio enthusiast, operating under call Sign VE1 YU, was a member of the local legion, was active in a number of area bands on the clarinet/saxophone, was active in the community providing sound support to many activities one of which were the Grand Falls Cataract ball games in the 50's. He was a loving father, grandfather, Great- Grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by sons Joe (Betty) - Halifax, and Fred, two sisters Clara and Muriel (Dionne), sister-in-law, Ethel, two grandchildren (Carolyn and Michael), four great grandchildren, as well as nieces (Louise Dawson, Shirley Barnhouse) and nephews (Jeffrey, Dan McLaughlin and John Filgas). He was predeceased by sisters Agnes and Enid and brothers Irvin and Joe. Resting at O'Regan's Funeral Home, 515 Everard Daigle Blvd., Grand Falls with visiting hours Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. His funeral will be held Wednesday, June 9th at 11 a.m. from the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Grand Falls. Burial will follow in the Assumption Cemetery on Portage Road. In remembrance, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society. www.oregans.ca
