Alexander Joseph Boyd
Passed on: October 30th, 2008
June 17, 1934 – October 30, 2008 Sydney Mines It is with great sadness that the family of Alexander Joseph Boyd announces his sudden passing at the age of 74 years at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax. Alex was the son of the late Edgar and Lola (Dewfall) Boyd. Born in Florence, but living most of his adult years as a resident of Sydney Mines, Alex worked as a coal miner in Princess Colliery and the Prince Mine for 37 years until his retirement in 1989. Alex’s first love was his family and he was well known to all as a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, always displaying a gentle manner and having kind words for all those he knew. Alex’s love of salmon fishing drew him to the waters of Margaree as a young boy. This passion continued throughout his life, and it was here where he and his wife Mary met countless people who shared his love for fishing and who grew to respect him as a kind and true friend. He passed countless hours tying flies during the winter in anticipation of the summer months that would be spent on the river and in offering hospitality to all those who dropped in at the trailer for a cup of tea. Alex will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend of 49 years, Mary (MacDonald) Boyd; his sons, Kevin MacDonald (Shirley), North Sydney, Edgar, Sydney Mines, Sandy (Carrie), Fort McMurray and Ricky, at home; as well as his daughter, Dena (Ron) MacDonald, Wolfville. Alex will also be fondly remembered by his 13 grandchildren, Nolan, Darcy, Sarah, Matthew, Ben, Sam, Mark, Stephen, Tammy, Amber, Zack, Logan and Emily, and his great-grandson, Daniel. A memorial service to celebrate Alex’s life will be held on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at 2 p.m. in Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, with Norma Mills officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Those who desire may make memorial donations in Alex’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca
