DR. FERNETTA GERALDINE LEVY

LEVY, DR. FERNETTA GERALDINE - Dr. Fernetta Geraldine Levy, 93, Truro, formerly of Wolfville, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Colchester Hospital on July 12, 2004. Born in Elgin, NB, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Garland) Barchard. Ferne was predeceased by her husband Dr. I. Judson Levy and brothers Cyril and Everett. She is survived by daughter Lynn Elizabeth Crosby, Truro; grandchildren Matthew Ian and Megan Lynn; sisters Beulah (Mrs. Donald Caldwell), Lake Utopia, NB; Doris (Mrs. John Everall), Shrewsbury, England; Evelyn (Mrs. Jim McCafferty) Moncton, NB. Ferne began her career as teacher and continued her interest in young people's work with CGIT, camping and the Baptist Young People's Union. Married in 1939, she served alongside her husband in his pastoral ministries in Baptist Churches in Sussex NB, Charlottetown PE, Moncton NB, St. Catherines and Hamilton ON, and during his Chaplaincy at Acadia University. A faithful servant of the Baptist Church throughout her life, Ferne was a member of Canadian Baptist Overseas Mission Board, President of the United Baptist Women's Missionary Union, vice-president of the Women's Department of the Baptist World Alliance, President of the North American Baptist Women's Union, and first woman to serve as President of the Canadian Bible Society. She was the first woman honoured by Acadia University with an honourary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1979. Visitation 7-9pm Wednesday in H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 568 Main St., Wolfville. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 pm in Wolfville Baptist Church, preceded by a private burial in Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Bible Society, the Acadia University Chaplaincy Endowment Fund or to a charity of your choice.
