Chester E. Clarke AMHERST - Chester E. Clarke, age 97, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at Gables Lodge, Amherst on Friday, January 19, 2007. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Charles and Edna (Long) Clarke. Chester worked with Atlantic Wholesalers. He was assistant manager in the Amherst branch from 1949 until 1952 at which time he moved to Kentville, NS and became manager of the branch there. In 1962 he returned to Amherst and became manager of the Amherst Branch until his retirement in 1974. He was a former member of the Amherst Curling Club, the Amherst Kinsmen Club, the K40's and enjoyed curling. He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Elsie T. Atkinson, Amherst;3 daughters Betty Yorston, Truro, Barb (Ed) Crandall, Amherst, and Gail (Jack) Hines, Masstown, NS, 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Gerald (Mildred), Amherst and Russell (Barb), Amherst, NS; a half -brother Randy (Mary) Clarke, Moncton , and half-sister, Anne (Ebb) Smith, Halifax, NS. He was predeceased by a sister Grace and brothers Kenneth, Garnet , William and Peter. Arrangments have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst (667-8777). There will be no visitation or memorial service. Burial will take place in the Warren Cemetery at a later date.
