HICKEY, ELSIE GENEVA - The death of Elsie Geneva Hickey, widow of the late Frederick Hickey (1957), occurred October 21, 2004 at Nashwaak Villa, Stanley at the age of 93. A lifetime resident of the Stanley area, Elsie suffered a stroke and has been a resident of the Nashwaak Villa since 1997. Born April 22, 1911 in Giant's Glenn, she was the daughter of the late Harry Foreman (1943) and late Winnifred Keenan Foreman (1983). In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by infant sons Henry (1949) and Joseph (1951), daughter Patricia (1998), infant brother Gerald (1931), brothers John (1998) and Arthur (2000), sister Phyllis (2000), nephews Osbourne Foreman (1994) and Michael Foreman (1978) and niece Sharon Flynn (2000). She is survived by daughter Mary and husband Ray Gibouleau of Old Town, Maine; son Terry and wife Lorraine (Greene) of Lower Sackville, N.S.; granddaughters Monique Gibouleau, Karen and husband Jeff Patterson, and Laurie Hickey and fiancée Leigh Smith; grandsons Raymond and Michael Hickey and greatgrandson Joshua Patterson. She is survived also by her sisters, Glenna and husband Louis DiCarlo, Jessie Sparkes, and Helen and husband Vincent Mudge, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Elsie graduated from the Provincial Normal School, taught in rural one-room schools, took time off to raise her family, and retired from teaching as an elementary teacher in Stanley. She taught school in Giant's Glenn, Pokiok Settlement, North Tay, Gillespie Settlement, California Settlement, Cross Creek, Stanley Superior School, Ward Settlement, Nashwaak Village, Durham Bridge, Stanley Elementary, and Stanley Junior High. She would often recall the name of a former student and wonder what ever happened to that person. She was a charter member and a lifetime member of the Stanley Catholic Women's League and a past President as well as chairlady of numerous committees over the years. She was awarded the CWL Maple Leaf Pin in recognition of her service to the CWL. Elsie was a member of the Stanley Women's Institute, the Senior Citizens Club and the Retired Teachers Association. She was well known for her organizing talents, which she put to use for family, community and church events. Elsie enjoyed baking, especially birthday cakes for her nieces and nephews and for family celebrations. Her other interests included knitting and making quilts as wedding gifts. Her travels have taken her to Newfoundland and across Canada to British Columbia as well as to the United States visiting family and friends. She especially enjoyed short drives around the Stanley area and "up the Glen" where she lived as a child. A lover of nature and history, and a great reader, she was a walking encyclopedia to her family and others. On the occasion of her 80th birthday she wrote about her heritage and growing up in Stanley. This was later published in her book "Bits and Tidbits", copies of which are in several libraries. As a member of St. Patrick's Parish she served as choir member, regularly sang the daily "High Mass", organized church functions, cared for the altar linens and taught Sunday School. Visitation will take place on Sunday, October 24 from 7 to 9 PM at St. Patrick's Church in Stanley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 25, 2004 at 11 AM from St. Patrick's Church with Father Maurice Swift as the Celebrant. Interment will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Stanley. There will be a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Stanley Friends Food Bank, the Stanley Catholic Women's League, or the General Scholarship Fund at Stanley High School.
