LORIS JEAN (JONAH) MILLER

MILLER, LORIS JEAN (JONAH) - At home, on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004 in the arms of her beloved husband, Barry. Theirs was a love relationship unparalleled. High school sweethearts, best friends, and soul mates, they were and are one in the spirit. They believed they were not human beings having a spiritual experience. They knew they were spiritual beings having a human experience. They have a blessed assurance that they will be together again - forever. Loris was predeceased by two infants (Baby boy, April 4, 1968; Baby girl, December 16, 1973) and her parents, Orland and Mabel (Woodworth) Jonah of Dawson Settlement, Albert County, New Brunswick. She was an only child born on May 25, 1944. She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 37 years, Dr. W. Barry Miller, Fredericton, and her pride and joy, her two sons, Dr. Justin Barry Miller (Karen), Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and Chad Elliott Miller (Jennifer), Fredericton. She is also survived by her faithful dog "Cassie Faith" who was her constant companion throughout her illness. Loris was a wonderful wife and an exemplary mother. She was truly a gift from God. She had the most beautiful smile and could always see the positive aspects of life. She was loved by her friends, admired by her colleagues, and highly valued by her patients. To know Loris was to experience an insight into the Glory of God. She was a visionary, an academic, a wonderful homemaker and an enthusiastic gardener. Loris graduated from the United Baptist Bible Training School (U.B.B.T.S.) in Moncton and from the Moncton Hospital School of Nursing (as Registered Nurse). She had a Bachelor of Education Degree with Distinction (1983) and a Master of Education Degree (Health Education) (1987) from the University of New Brunswick. Loris was awarded an assistantship iin curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Education while completing her undergraduate degree. She also served as a lecturer in 1994 - 1995. In regard to her Masters thesis, she collaborated with the Social Program Group of Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. Loris was in the process of completing a degree in nursing when she became ill. She was awarded the Culter Nursing Scholarship in 2003. Loris had a New Brunswick Teacher's License and New Brunswick Teacher Certification - Level VI. She enjoyed serving as a supply teacher and school nurse at Fredericton High School in 1993. The school nurse position at that time required an RN with a New Brunswick Teachers license. Loris had administrative experience as Head Nurse (Provincial Hospital - Centracare, Saint John; Supervisor of Nursing, Victoria Public Hospital, Fredericton and as Program Coordinator with the New Brunswick Lung Association. She also worked as a delivery room nurse at the Victoria Public Hospital, at the DVA Health Unit and in Addiction Services of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, River Valley Health Authority. She coordinated, developed, implemented and evaluated health care programs, and conducted original research, some of which has been published at a national level. Loris devoted her life to helping others. Loris was a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader and Chaired Christian Education Committees. She thoroughly enjoyed hosting receptions and directing special events in church. She was President of The Parent Support Group of the Fredericton High School Black Kats Football Team (Chad's team) that won three consecutive Provincial Championships. Loris was diagnosed in September 2003 with a rare form of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in that it also included FTD (Fronto Temporal Dementia). Although the illness could affect her mind and body it could never touch her spirit. With Barry as her primary care giver, they celebrated each day God gave them together. The battle is over, the victory has been won! "...faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love". 1 Corinthians 13: 13 Pallbearers are Joanne DeMerchant, RN, Vivian Savage, RN, Anne- Marie O'Brien, RN, Jackie Powers, RN, Sharon Oldford, RN, Eleanor Phillips, RN, Dorothy Dauphinee, RN, and Betty Ann MacMackin, RN. Resting at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, New Brunswick E3B 3N7 (458- 9170) with visitation on Friday, November 12th, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Saturday, November 13th, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating assisted by Rev. Ralph Irving and Rev. Scott Ryder. Interment will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Gardens, 1167 Salisbury Road, Moncton, New Brunswick.
