Arthur Ernest Thornton AMHERST - Arthur Ernest Thornton, 95, of Amherst passed away on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at the Victoria Manor in Amherst. Born in Amherst on Dec. 18, 1913, he was the youngest son of the late John and Amelia (Adams) Thornton. Arthur worked as a self-employed mason in the Amherst area for more than 50 years. He liked spending time at his cottage at Jackson Point, with his friends and family. During his life he enjoyed, dancing, card playing, motorcycling, boating, snowmobiling and four wheeling. Arthur and Emily were members of the "Fly Away Campers" and travelled around the area. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his first wife, the former Emily Mitchell; son, William; daughter in law Wanda, as well as his sister, Connie Ison; and brothers, Charles and Arnold. Arthur will be fondly remembered by his wife, the former, Tallien (Dolly) Weatherbee; daughter, Marilyn (George) Baptie of Berwick; son, Douglas of Amherst; as well as four grandchildren, Blair Thornton, Donald (Joanne), Julie and Douglas Baptie; two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Baptie; stepchildren, Joan (Wentzell) Ripley and Allan (Pat) Weatherbee both of Amherst; many nieces and nephews. Resting at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst with visitation on Monday, Dec. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be celebrated on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Christ Church, Amherst with Archdeacon Glenn Eason officiating.
