ARTHUR R. ABELL

ABELL, ARTHUR R. - The death of Arthur Reginald Abell occurred on May 5, 2005 in Kanata, Ontario, after a brief illness. He was born in Moncton, N.B. in 1913, the son of Edward J. Abell and Mabel (Bell) Abell. He was predeceased by his wife Alice (nee Fielding) in 1993, and by brother Claude, and sisters, Vera Abell and Dorothy Rooney. He is survived by his sister Muriel Wilkins, London, Ont, daughters Beverley (Cliff) Floyd, Stouffville, Ont, and Phyllis (T. Robert) Parker, New Glasgow, N.S., son Robert (Evelyn) Abell, Kanata, Ont, grandchildren Deborah (Rob) Risto, David (Nadine) Floyd, Catherine (Paul) Sampson, Beth (Jim) Parker Godin, Kendrick (Christine Feldman) Abell, and Deanna Abell (Jason Wright), great-grandchildren Kyle Birker-Risto, Christian Birker-Risto, Mitchell Risto, Caleb Risto, Nicholas Sampson, Jacob Godin and Sophie Godin. Art, who was a member of the Maritime Commercial Travelers Association for 55 years, spent most of his career with Purity Flour/ Maple Leaf Mills Ltd. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and often spoke warmly of the many people he met, especially during those years when he worked in Saint John as the Sales Manager for the Atlantic Provinces. Art worked a number of years in Halifax and Kentville. N.S. and was a longtime resident of East Riverside, N.B. before moving to Ontario. He enjoyed curling at the Glooscap Club in Kentville, N.S. and Saint Andrews and East Riverside clubs in Saint John, N.B. He golfed at the Westfield Country Club and was a longtime member of the East Riverside Golf and Country Club, Saint John, N.B. Art was always actively involved in his community. He was president of both the Kentville and the Saint John Gyro clubs and Governor of District # 6 Gyro International. He served as chairman of the Kennebecasis Valley Recreation Centre for the year 1973/74. He enjoyed politics and had been both a councillor and Deputy Mayor for the village of East Riverside, Kings County, N.B. He was past president of the Kings west Liberal Association (N.B.) He was a member of Saint David's United Church, Rothesay, N.B. and chaired the Official Board during the expansion and renovations of 1988. Upon retirement he enjoyed many winters at Pompano Beach, Florida, also enjoyed fishing on the Hammond River, playing bridge and he was an avid hockey fan. Art loved life. A Service in Memory of Art will be held at Kanata United Church, 33 Leacock Drive, Ottawa, Monday, May 9, 2005 at 2pm. A Service in Memory will also be held Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Saint David's United Church, Rothesay, NB at 2pm with interment in Titus Hill Cemetery, Titusville.
