MARGARET LOUISE (PEGGY) MEIER
MEIER, MARGARET LOUISE (PEGGY) - Peacefully, at her home on Friday May 6th, 2005. Wife of the late L.H. (Bert) Meier, she was the daughter of Leon Vallis and Laura (Stiles) Vallis. Peggy was predeceased by her brother Ken Vallis and her sister Jean Vallis. Her life was one of giving and caring that started very early. At age six, she became the main support to her parents, helping to care for her ailing mother and to raise her brother and sister. After graduating from Saint John High, she studied at the Normal School in Fredericton and then taught at schools in Charlotte and Saint John counties. She was a beloved teacher who formed life long friendships with her students and fellow teachers. Peggy was also an accomplished musician, serving as organist and choir director of First Baptist Church for a number of years. She was an active accompanist, playing for many happy years at Sheila Ross's ballet classes, at Kiwanis meetings and for weddings and funerals in the Saint John area. The high point of her career was when she was asked to accompany Portia White at her Saint John concert. Peggy was a member of St. Marks United Church for over 50 years. She contributed as a pianist, substitute organist, member of the Handbell Choir and long-term member of the UCW. Peggy was a dedicated, loving wife and mother. She was the rock that enabled her husband Bert to contribute so much to the Saint John community. She was a steadfast supporter of her children Paul (Bedford, N.S.), Pam (Ottawa, Ontario) and Mark (Quispamsis). She was a loving grandmother to Matthew, Megan, Maggie, Michael, Natasha, Joey, Jill and Billy Joe. Peggy gave freely of herself. She kept many senior friends going with her concern, her delicious food and her driving services. To know her was to love her. In her later years, as her health declined she received some of which she had sown. It is hard for her family to adequately express their gratitude for the love, care and respect that was shown to her by care-givers Carol Dudley Stevens and Faye Gautreau and their families. They embraced Peggy as one of their own and gave her final years dignity, love and laughter. Visitation will take place at Castle Funeral Home, Fallsview on Wednesday, May 11 between 2:00 and 4:00 pm and 6:00 and 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at St. Marks United Church on Thursday May 12 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
