COLWELL, GEORGE WILLIAM - George William Colwell passed away quietly on May 30th, 2005 at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Born on October 17th, 1916 in Lower Jemseg, the son of the late Cecil and Ethel (Currie) Colwell, he lived his entire life within the small community. Many in Queens and Kings Counties knew him as "the Apple Man" because of his travels throughout the area selling his homegrown fruit. As well, for many years he enjoyed interaction with his many friends and acquaintances as he stood selling his produce at the weekly Sussex Cattle Sale. In the late 1970's, he took on extra work operating the Gagetown Ferry, retiring from that work at the age 65. However, like most farmers of his day, he never really retired, but rather, continued to keep his "garden" (about an acre) until the end of his last growing season. He was a long time member of the Jemseg Baptist Church, served on various committees, as a trustee and a deacon and was appointed "Honorary Deacon" on his retirement from active leadership. He was a life member of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservative Party and a member of the Jemseg Mayflower Seniors. Husband for 62 years of the late Hilda (York), George leaves behind two daughters, Judith of Sackville, NB and Linda of Ottawa, ON; two sons, Stephen (Jean) of New Maryland, NB and Alan (Sandra) of Musquash, NB; five grandchildren, Bradley, Janna, Bryan, Shawnee and Tim; a sister, Myrtle Farris and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald. He was a principled and hardworking man who greatly loved his family and valued his many friends. Visiting will be held at the Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 1st, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 2nd, 2005 at 2:00 pm from the Jemseg Baptist Church. Rev. Laurie Fenerty will officiate. Interment will be in the Jemseg Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Jemseg Baptist Church Building Fund or St. James Anglican Church Building Fund or donor's choice. www.oromoctofh.com
