HARMON, WILLIAM BURKE - William Burke Harmon of Queenstown and Robertson Point, New Brunswick died at Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 25, 2005. He was attended by his wife Joan (Forsyth) Harmon and his nine children. Bill Harmon was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 1, 1920, the eldest son of a New York family. As a child he suffered from Pots Disease and spent several of his early years immobilized. In recovering, he acquired the patience, grace and indefatigable optimism that characterized the rest of his life. He grew up sailing and fishing off New England and developed a love of the water and boats. He was educated at Canterbury School and Yale University. When his spinal problems kept him out of the service after Pearl Harbour, he went to work for Pan American Airways under contract to the US military in Newfoundland, Liberia and French West Africa. He stayed on with Pan Am and in May 1948, married Martha Joan Forsyth, originally of Fredericton. The newlyweds were stationed in Barcelona, Spain where their first child was born. They returned to the US and lived on Long Island, NY, where the balance of their 9 children were born. In 1973, the family moved to New Brunswick, joining old friends at Robertson Point and making new ones in Queenstown and Gagetown. Bill started Queenstown Industries with his sons John and Doug and son-in-law John Persson, and later launched a farming operation with son Hugh. He was active in the Gagetown Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship. He authored many Rotary skits and was a reliable writer of light verse and limericks. Bill was a member of the "Macquapit Duck Club" and a lifelong and able sailor. Bill held his faith and convictions without wavering, but with optimism and love. His life, to the end, was an example to friends and family. Bill Harmon is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Mary, Joan and Ann; sons Will, Tom, John, Doug, Hugh and Jim; 28 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. We will all remember him with love and gratitude. Visitation at the Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home, Monday June 27, 2005 from 4:30-7:30 pm and Tuesday, June 28, 2005 from 4:30-7:30 pm. Funeral Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Oromocto at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 29, 2005 with Rev. Ken Weir officiating. Interment at St. Bridget's Parish, Gagetown.
