Erik S. Pedersen UPPER?NAPPAN - Erik S. Pedersen, 91, of Upper Nappan, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at the High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill. Born in Jutland, Denmark, he was a son of the late Peder and Ingeborg (Matiesen) Pedersen. Erik emigrated to Canada in 1929 along with his parents and siblings. Erik joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1940, and served overseas during the Second World War. He saw action at the front. Upon returning to Nova Scotia after the War, he purchased a farm in Upper Nappan in 1947. It was there he started his lifelong farming career "with just two cows and a bicycle." What started out as a small mixed farm became a thriving dairy operation. Erik was very active in various farm producer organizations. During his "retirement" years, Erik ran a strawberry and raspberry u-pick business at his Upper Nappan farm. He enjoyed meeting and talking to all the people who came to pick his berries. Erik was a long-time active member of the Amherst Rotary Club. He was also a member of Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church. Erik will be remembered by his many friends and acquaintances for his warm hospitality. He is survived by his wife, the former Leona Bacon, his daughter, Linda (Charles) Austin of Ottawa; sons Philip (Paula), Larry (Janet) of Nappan; half-sisters, Greta Davies, Mona Kidsey and Mary Pedersen of Mississauga, Ont.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Marie, sister Edith Cooke, half-brother Axel, and brother-in-law Jack Davies. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777). A memorial service will be held at Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst, on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m., Rev. Patti Blundell officiating.
