MITCHELL, BELVA MARGARET FRANCES - The death of Belva Mitchell occurred suddenly and peacefully in Northwood Centre on September 22, 2005. Born April 15, 1917, in Montreal, Que., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Viola Lafleur. Prior to her marriage in 1951, she was a long time employee of Eaton's Montreal, Que. In the early 1960's, she moved her family to Saint John, NB. There she worked at Sears Canada and was well-known as the "Candy Lady". Belva was a dedicated volunteer and a skilled seamstress and needle crafter. She volunteered at Saint John Centre Food Basket well into her early 80's. A special award, "The Belva Award", was created, due to her hard work and dedication, by Saint John Centre Housing Co-op, where she resided for many years. In 2003, ill health forced her to move to Rocmaura Nursing Home. In order to be closer to her family she transferred to Northwood Centre in June 2003. Here she was lovingly cared for and enjoyed for her wit and spunkiness. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister in infancy; brothers, Leonard, Leland, Lyle; her son Earl at six weeks, and daughter, Jane Elizabeth at six years years old. She is survived by her daughters, Sharron Frampton (William), Dartmouth; Marlene Maughn (Randy), Bryan, Tex; son, Everette, Halifax; daughter, Holly Mitchell (Tim Hintz), Calgary Alta.; grandchildren, Stephanie Fillmore (Brett Sinclair), Dartmouth; Michael Creighton, Toronto, Ont.; Neil Creighton, London, England; Joanna Creighton, San Francisco; Alison Wensink, Calgary Alta. Her family is grateful for her long life, love, wit and words of wisdom, "Don't take any wooden nickels." At her request, her remains have been cremated. A family memorial is planned for a later date.
