KENNETH JAMES BLAKEMORE (JIM) HOWARD
HOWARD, KENNETH JAMES BLAKEMORE (JIM) - After a lengthy and brave struggle with various forms of cancer, Jim left this life on Wednesday September 28th in the comfort of his home, with loved ones at his side. Jim's positive nature, easy smile and genuine appreciation for any acts of kindness made him a joy to know and even easier to love. He leaves a great void in the hearts of both his wife, Marise, and son, Robert. Born July 6, 1922 at 249 Douglas Avenue, Saint John, Jim resided in Saint John all his life. He graduated from Saint John High School, class of 1940. In 1943, when vision problems precluded him from active service, Jim joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, where he was stationed at Camp Gagetown. Jim worked 53 years in the retail trade. This effort culminated in the purchasing of his own business in 1967. The store which would be known as Howard's Tobacco, 45 Charlotte Street, was more than an enterprise to Jim; it was a large part of his life until sold in 1995. Many of his customers would grow to become his personal friends and a few still regularly called. In his retirement, St. Andrews and New River Beach were his favorite weekend getaways, where he enjoyed the shops and restaurants of the former and beauty of both. As per Jim's request, cremation will take place followed by visitation at AW Cavanagh Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 91 Leinster St (634-1712) on Sunday from 7-9 pm. The service will be held on Monday at 1pm in Cavanagh's Chapel, and the interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Saint John Animal Rescue League, or charity of donor's choice. www.awcavanagh.com
