EVELYN MAY NEGUS

NEGUS, EVELYN MAY - Evelyn May Negus, of Whitman Court, Truro, passed away peacefully at home on October 14, 2005. She was born October 6, 1915 in Amherst, and was a daughter of the late Ned and Edna (Teed) Negus. She graduated from the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing in 1939, and later completed her degree in nursing at Dalhousie University. She joined the Canadian Army during World War II, and worked as a nursing sister, serving in England and Italy. She crossed the Atlantic Ocean several times on hospital ships, and survived a torpedo attack in which her vessel was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. Following the war, Evelyn worked in Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Camp Hill in Halifax. In 1967, she was appointed Director of Nursing Service at Lancaster D.V.A. Hospital, and retired from Saint John Regional Hospital, Western Division in 1979. She had been a resident of Truro since her retirement. During her career she established and taught the first Nursing Assistant Program. She was a member of the St. Andrew's United Church, Truro, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26, a charter member of Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and a former member of the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary and the Truro Historical Museum. Evelyn was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Lee Negus, of Brookfield. Cremation has taken place. By her request, there will be no memorial or funeral service. A committal service will be held on Wednesday at 4 pm in Brookfield Westside Cemetery with Rev. Jay Ettinger officiating. Donations will be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro.
