THOMAS IRVINE RILEY

RILEY, THOMAS IRVINE - Thomas Irvine Riley of Halifax, N.S. passed away peacefully, Friday, March 24th, at the age of 90 years, in his home surrounded by his family. Tom, born September 6, 1915 in Saint John, N.B. was the son of James N. and Beatrice Irvine Riley. Tom served his country in the RCAF during WWII being honourably discharged in 1945 holding the rank of Sergeant. Tom spent his life in the dairy business. After graduating from the Agricultural College in Guelph, Ont. he worked in Moncton, N.B. with a dairy supply company and in Campbellton N.B. as General Manager of Grey's Velvet Ice Cream until moving to Dartmouth in 1964 to be General Manager of Woodlawn Dairy. In 1969 he became Manager of the Milk Division of Twin Cities Dairy (now Farmer's Dairy). He resigned from Farmer's in 1975 into semi-retirement. He came out of retirement to set up and become Production Manager of Baxter's Dairy in Dartmouth. He retired again in 1980 to travel. He and Mary spent many happy years on the roads of Canada and the U.S. with their Airstream trailer, then spent a number of winters in Florida until Mary could not travel due to illness. Tom joined the Rotary Club in 1953 in Campbellton, N.B. and then moved to the Dartmouth Rotary Club in 1964 where he has been a member since. He served as President from 1978-1979. During Tom's time in Campbellton he was involved in a number of organizations, he was President of the Board of Trade; member of the Board of the Soldiers' Memorial Hospital; director of the New Brunswick T.B. Association and Worthy Patron of the Lady Alexander Chapter No. 24, O.E.S. Tom was also a 50-year, 33rd deg. member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Halifax. Tom was a long standing member of the Fairview United Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Mary Louise (Barnes) Riley, a sister, Constance Marion (in childhood) and his parents. Tom leaves behind a son Douglas and wife Donna of Halifax, daughter Elizabeth Bignell of South Carolina, grandchildren, Andrew Bignell of Dartmouth, Christine Riley and Thomas Riley of Halifax, and a sister, Dorothy Kingette of Rothesay N.B. as well as extended family and many friends. The family wishes to thank Roz Benoit, nurse practitioner of the General Medicine Heart Failure Clinic, for her loving and attentive care of Papa over these last six years. Visitation will be 7-9 pm Monday and Tuesday in the J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral Service will be 2 pm, Wednesday, March 29th in Fairview United Church, Dutch Village Road, Halifax, Rev. Heather Hemming officiating. Burial at a later date. Family flowers only.
