George Gordon Manson

Born: June 7th, 1920

Passed on: February 24th, 2008

George Gordon MansoGeorge Gordon Manson passed away on Feb. 24, 2008, in Kamloops, British Columbia, holding the hand of his wife of 59 years, Anne. His life was dedicated to teaching. In the 1940s, after a stint in the Canadian Navy, he taught math and science and served as a counselor in Rutland, BC. In the 1950s, in Dawson Creek, he served as principal of the junior high (a school he helped design), and a counsellor in the senior high. From there he went to Trail B.C., as head of counselling, and on to the University of Victoria, as an associate professor. From 1966 to his retirement in 1985, he found his academic home at Mount Allison University. There, he founded a department of education, and served as a full professor, department head, and finally, professor emeritus. After his retirement, he and his wife, Anne, moved back west, settling in Kamloops, B.C. He was a lover of life: of painting, classical music, golf, as well as cars, dogs, and crossword puzzles (which he could complete almost as fast as he could write). He loved telling stories, being with people, and, above all, being with his wife – their life together perfectly meshed. The descendent of a Scottish immigrant, he was the first member of his family to earn a doctorate (ed psych from the U of A). He was a survivor of cancer, a survivor of a broken spine, asthma, gout, cataracts, arthritis - the joys of aging, his wife would say. Smitten, finally, with leukemia and a weakened heart. He remained buoyant to the end. Gordon Manson was born in Rimby, Alta., on June 7, 1920, and lived into his 88th year. “I had a good run,” were among his last words. He is remembered as a quiet man, a chuckler, a true gentleman. He leaves behind two sisters, Helen and Pat, two brothers, Russ and Harold, two sons, Paul and Ross, and his beloved wife, Anne. He will be dearly missed. In memory, donations are welcome to Creating Tomorrow, a Foundation to help build the endowments of Kamloops Arts Gallery, Kamloops Symphony, and Western Canada Theatre. All donations are matched dollar-for-dollar by the provincial government. To donate, mail a cheque to Kamloops Foundation, PO Box 15, Kamloops, BC, V2C 5K3, or online at http://www.kag.bc.ca/supportus/donations.htm.
