MARY THERESA CARTON

CARTON, MARY THERESA - The death of Mary Theresa Carton of Saint John West, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on June 3, 2006 after a short illness. A member of a well-known Fairville family, she was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late Arthur W. and Catherine (Murphy) Carton. She was a life-long resident of the West Side and a devout member of St. Rose of Lima Parish. Following her early education at St. Rose School, she graduated from St. Vincent Girls' High School and Mount-Carmel Academy. She began her working career with the Children's Aid Society. Later she joined the Federal Civil Service and served for many years in the Administrative offices of the Department of Veteran's Affair's in Saint John. She held membership in the Irish-Canadian Cultural Association, The Federal Civil Servants' Superannuates' Association and St. Rose C.W.L. She was an active golfer, bowler and badminton player in her earlier years and was also a talented marksman during a volunteer time with the Militia. An avid reader, she also enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and had a close circle of friends. She is survived by one brother, Dr. Kevin Carton of Brunswick, ME; and a number of nieces and nephews in the United States, Nova Scotia and Ottawa, as well as several cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Joan; a brother, Joseph Carton of Ottawa; and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Bankiewiecz (Mike) of Columbus, Ohio. Her keen intellect, witty sense of humour and sincere friendship will be sadly missed by many. Resting at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue (634-1701) with visitation on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at 10 o'clock. Internment in Holy Cross Cemetery followed by reception at the Fallsview Family Reception Centre. Memorial donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
