GORMAN, WILFRED MELVIN, 1921 - 2006 - The family of Mr. Wilfred Melvin Gorman of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, Veterans Wing formerly of Church St, Miramichi, wish to announce his death which occurred on October 18, 2006 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years. He was born September 10, 1921 in Chatham, NB. Son of the late Gertrude (Fitzpatrick) and Wilfred Gorman Sr. He married Irene (Snookie) Maher on October 28, 1947. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Snookie); two daughters, Beverly (Robert) Constable of Fredericton, NB, Trudy (Terrence) Walsh of Miramichi, NB; one son, Noonan (Irene) Gorman of Miramichi, NB; two sisters, Helen (the late Phillip) Galley of Chapel Island Rd, Rita (Herbert) Ryan of Miramichi, NB; four brothers, Marvin (the late Gladys) Gorman, Raymond (Marjorie) Gorman both of Hamilton, ON, Leonard (Angeline) Gorman of Nelson-Miramichi, and Leo Gorman of Miramichi; four grandchildren, Natalie Walsh (Dan Bradford), Sabrina Gilliss (Glen Vautour) both of Miramichi, Steven (Sharri) Constable of Fredericton, NB; three great grandchildren, Amber Vautour-Gilliss of Miramichi, Skylar Constable, Alexander Wood both of Fredericton, NB, and Justin Adair of Miramichi; along with several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sisters, Eileen Mick and Theresa (the late Leonard) Butler; brothers, Stanley (the late Mary) Gorman, Reginald Gorman; and one infant great granddaughter, Gabrylle Constable. Wilfred was a decorated World War II Veteran who served in the Bomber Command Pathfinder 405 Squadron, where he completed thirty three operations being shot down on Sept. 27, 1943 over Groningen, Holland. He was assisted by the S.R. Bosch Family for whom Wilfred was forever thankful for their heroic endeavors by housing and helping him connect with the under ground. Wilfred was captured six months later by the German Gestapo and taken prisoner of war. In 1946 Wilfred was appointed Post Master of South Nelson (Now Nelson-Miramichi) and he served with distinction in this capacity for thirty years along with serving as supervisory post master for 21 additional offices in the region. In retirement Wilfred directed much of his effort to his insurance business, Gorman Insurance from which he retired, again in 1989. Wilfred at all times enjoyed his family and was a wonderful role model for them as well as many others, as he was involved in many community organizations for which he received the Canada's 125th Anniversary Medal. Wilfred was a chartered member and past president and treasurer of the 245 Miramichi RCAF Wing Association, Charter member and past president of the Miramichi Rotary Club. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1992. He was a Chartered Member of the Heritage Club, Founding member and past president of the Miramichi Irish Society, Past Chairman of the sponsoring body of the 597 Air Cadet Sqn, Life member of the Air Cadet League of Canada New Brunswick Division. Member of Miramichi Legion Branch #3, Was a member of the Bishop Hill Assembly 4th Degree Council #1219. He was the member of the board of directors of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, member of the Liberal Association, member of the Chatham Curling Club. Member of the Miramichi Golf and Country Club. Wilfred volunteered his services at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics and delivered to clients of the Meals on Wheels Program. Visitation with family and friends will be held from Maher's Funeral Home, Miramichi, on Thursday, October 19th 2006 from 7 to 9 pm and on Friday, October 20th, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 11am from St. Michael's Basilica, Miramichi with Fr. John Fraser officiating. Interment will be held in St. Michael's Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer's Society or the memorial of ones choice would be appreciated by the family.
