William "Bill" Cheaney

Sackville, NB - William "Bill" C. Cheaney, age 86, of Sackville, passed away peacefully at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Friday, June 22, 2007. Born in Hotham, Ont., he was a son of the late James and Edith (Elliott) Cheaney. Bill served overseas during World War II and enjoyed showing new recruits how to drive the heavy machinery. He was formerly employed with Neilson Chocolate in Toronto as a pipe fitter and head of the maintenance gang. Retiring in 1980 he moved to Sackville in 1999. Regulars at Shanty Bay Golf Club, he and Gladys shared a passion for golf. Bill loved to putter around the house and was always up for carpentry and plumbing challenges. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he always put family first. He will be sadly missed by his wife of over 60 years, the former Gladys (Ferro), Sackville; three daughters, Ruth (Frank) Cole, Sackville, Joyce Tan, Saint John, N.B., and Janet (Edward) Newbery, Toronto, and five grandchildren, Jeff, Ross, Michael, Craig and Veronica. The last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by his brothers Sumner and Cyril; sisters Yola, Bernice, Peggy and Della. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville (364-1300), where the funeral was held on Monday, June 25, 2007, at 11 a.m., Pastor Andrew Swanson officiating, with burial in the Sackville Cemetery.
