82, Sydney It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the sudden passing of Peter Smits, which occurred Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Didam, Holland, he was the son of the late Theodorus and Johanna Smits. Peter was employed with Armac Construction until his retirement in 1991. After dad’s retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and tending to his precious gardening and his flowers around the house. Peter is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Bernadina “Dini” (Wanders), his three daughters, Jenny (John) Stech, Jacksonville, Fla., Edna (Paul) McCulloch, Pictou Landing, Mary Ann (Ivan) MacAulay, New Waterford, son, Jerry (Patricia) Smits, Sydney, grandchildren, Billy, Johanna, Stephen, Sandra, Hillary, Emily and Peter. He is also survived by stepsister, Lida Smits, Holland, brother, Gradis (Rodina) Smits, Prime Brook, stepbrother, Jan Smits, Holland, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Angela Marie Smits, 2004, also a sister, Dora Rieswyk and a brother, Wim Smits. Visitation will take place (today) Friday, April 18, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Reception will be held at Chant’s Funeral Home after burial.
