GEORGE ELMER BONNELL

BONNELL, GEORGE ELMER, F.R.C. S., M.D. - The death of Dr. George Elmer Bonnell in his 89th year, occurred on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at his home in Fredericton, N.B. Born in Hopefield, Prince Edward Island, he was the son of Harry and Lottie (MacEachern) Bonnell. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Mary Calder and five children: Ann Charlotte, Fredericton; Cranston, Fredericton; Rosemary (Laurent Mareschal), Toronto, Ont.; Roy (Genevieve Marchand), Montreal, P.Q., and Shena Martha (James Hornell), Cambridge-Narrows, NB. He was a loving grandfather to Ceilidh, Hamish, and Logan Hornell; Madelaine and Sarah Mareschal; and Marc and Emma Bonnell. He was the last surviving member of his family, being predeceased by brothers Elton, Bill, Senator Dr. Lorne and Dr. John Bonnell and sisters Hazel Lea and Lavinia Farrar. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Cathy Bonnell of Ottawa, Ont. He received his early education in a one room schoolhouse in Hopefield, and later West Kent School in Charlottetown. During the Second World War, he served overseas from 1939-1945 in England, Italy, and France and took part in the Liberation of the Netherlands. He served with the Royal Canadian Artillery and was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and was twice Mentioned in Dispatches for bravery. Upon return from the war, he upgraded his education at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. He subsequently was accepted and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1953. He then furthered his training at McGill University, earning his surgical fellowship in Urology in 1960. During his urological training he was involved, as an assisting doctor, in the first kidney transplant ever performed in the British Empire. He set up his practice in urology in Fredericton, becoming Fredericton's first urologist. He was Chief of Surgery at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Despite a demanding practice and five active children, he spent many happy hours at his hobby farm in Cambridge-Narrows. He was a Master Bee-keeper having developed the interest for this hobby many decades earlier with his father, Harry. He was a member of the Central New Brunswick Bee-Keepers Association and was one of the founding members of the New Brunswick Agro-Pollination Co-operative. In 1992, he received the commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in recognition of his service to his community and to Canada. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Following cremation a service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 1 pm on Wednesday, August 1, 2007. The Service at the church will be conducted by Rev. Douglas Blaikie. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4 will hold a legion tribute service at the church at 1:00 pm. Following the service, interment will occur at the cemetery in McDonald's Corner with the Rev. Gilbert Todd officiating. No flowers by request of the family.
