BARBARA (STRICKLAND) PHILLIPS

PHILLIPS, BARBARA (STRICKLAND) - It is with sadness the family announce the passing of Barbara Phillips, age 86, a resident of Union Street, North Sydney on Tuesday February 5th, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Martha Ellen (Rogers) Strickland and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Barb had a varied nursing career, she lived and worked in various provinces across Canada and also in Europe. She went back to university and graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1970, and then a Masters of Education in 1979 from the University of New Brunswick. She then taught nursing in Saint John, N.B. until her retirement. Barb's love of travel took her all over the world, but she loved the time she spent at her summer home in New Haven, Victoria County, where she was renown for hosting her tea socials. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Vera Strickland; a nephew, Ralph Strickland and a niece Mary Capstick; also by a number of cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, George Lantz Phillips; her brothers, George William (Fox), Ralph, Jack and Gordon. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service for Barb will be held on 11:00 a.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church Fund or a charity of choice.
