JUDGE H. HAZEN - 1939-2008 STRANGE

STRANGE, JUDGE H. HAZEN - 1939-2008 - Judge H. Hazen Strange passed away peacefully on May 14, 2008, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Heather; adored daughters, Elizabeth and Jenny, brother, Bobby (Peggy); nephew Robbie (Kimberly); niece Kyla Pollard (Carl); sister-in-law Barb Buckley (Robert), Aunt Mary Copp and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, H. Hazen Strange, Sr. and Marion Strange, and brother, Colin Bruce Strange. Although born in O'Leary, PEI, Hazen spent most of his life in Fredericton. His life was filled with achievements including many distinguished awards. He holds BBA, BA and BCL degrees from UNB and began his law career after being admitted to the Bar in 1964. He spent time in private practice and worked in Ottawa for the 1967 Centennial Commission before returning to Fredericton in 1967 to become a prosecutor with the province of New Brunswick. He was appointed Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in 1969 and became Director in 1971. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978. Hazen was appointed to the Provincial Court of New Brunswick in 1981. He worked initially in Burton and later in Fredericton and enjoyed travelling around the province to hear cases. He loved his time serving as Chief Provincial Court Judge from 1987-1997. He continued on the bench until his sudden passing. Hazen was a true gentleman. He treated people with fairness and respect and was highly regarded by those in his profession. His love for his work was secondary only to his love for his family. In his spare time, he was an avid salmon fisherman and storyteller. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. A celebration of Hazen's life will be held Tuesday, May 20th at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. Cannon T.A. Smith and the Very Reverend Keith Joyce will officiate. Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross or the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program. The family wishes to thank all of those involved in caring for Hazen over the last few days of his life.
