NELLIE MARIE SMITH

SMITH, NELLIE MARIE - Nellie Marie (Dunphy) Smith, wife of the late David Louis Smith, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 29, 2008. Born April 10, 1926 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Douglas Lloyd and Florence Teresa Dunphy of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Nellie was a nurse's aide and worked at Silver Glade Nursing Home and later at St. John St Stephen Nursing Home. Being a caregiver was at the very heart of who Nellie was, for she nurtured not only those she worked for, but also her family and friends - always "the caregiver". This was reflected in one of her favorite hobbies that she shared with her husband David: pickling and preserving. Many of those jars found their way to the shelves of others. She also liked to make covers for coat hangers, which also had a way of finding their way to others closets. She was kind and her heart was big. Nellie, who was close to God, was active in her church, in her Bible Study Group and with a team who prepared meals for the Saint John Community Chaplaincy. Always up for a bit of fun, Nellie enjoyed bowling, bus trips, seniors' group, and just having a plain good laugh. She lived in Grand Bay with David for 45 years where together they raised their family. She and David moved to Kings Valley Manor, Quispamsis, where she resided for 6 years. There she developed quick and loving relationships, especially within her court. She loved being with this newly "extended family", which loved and supported her in return. She truly loved being with her family and friends. Nellie is survived by son, David W. Smith (Florence) of Oshawa, ON; daughter, Mary Lou Sherwood (Ron) of Quispamsis, NB; sister, Ruby Hatfield of Alberta; 3 grandchildren, Leeann Fowler of Oshawa, ON, Scott McCarthy (Shannon) of Quispamsis, and Sean McCarthy (Kelly) of Fort McMurray, AB; 4 great grandchildren, Jamie and Bradley Fowler, and Logan and Ava McCarthy; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she is predeceased by brother, Carl Dunphy. Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with visitation on Thursday, July 3, 2008 from 2 to 4, and 7 to 9. A memorial service in celebration of Nellie's life will be held at Kings Valley Wesleyan Church, 332 Hampton Road, Quispamsis on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Donations in memory of Nellie may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
