GARNETT, DOUGLAS K. - The funeral of Douglas Kenneth Garnett of Saint John, NB and formerly of Garnett Settlement, husband of Candace Garnett, was held from Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB on Thursday, September 11, 2008. The service of celebration of his life was conducted by Rev. Charles Thompson of Florenceville Baptist Church. A personal tribute to Douglas' life was given by Paul Mills. The honourary pallbearers were Gregory Garnett, Hazen Walker, Bruce McNeill, Peter Blakeney and Danny Greg Garnett. The active pallbearers were Mark Garnett, Paul Howlett, Wayne Garnett, Wayne Nicholls, Terry Cameron and Ted Rankin. Among the many floral tributes received were those from: St. Martins Fire Department, staff of Shannahans Security - Saint John Airport, friends at Jani King Hockey Team, friends at the Turnbull Home, staff of Pool is Cool Billiards, the boys in the Carpenter Shop, Antigonish R.C.M.P. Detachment and Quality Auto. Among the numerous donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation were those from: Bains Corner United Church, Aviva Insurance Company, Lancaster #55 Seniors Men's League, Carnaghan Taylor Fowler Insurance, Bowl-More Kegers, M & S Fund of the City of Saint John, Jolly Rogers Hockey Club, the management of Crombie Reit - Sobey Leased Properties and the staff of Facility Management, City of Saint John. Donations made in memory of Douglas were also received for: Canadian Diabetes Association (NB); Garnett Settlement Christian Church; Canadian Cancer Society; First Wesleyan Church; Children's Wish Foundation; Kidney Foundation of Canada; Bains Corner United Church; Hospice Greater Saint John; Loch Lomond Villa, including one from the staff of Bowlarama; NB Lung Association; Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit; Alzheimer Society of NB; Gideon Bibles International, including one from the Ladies Guild of Garnett Settlement Christian Church; Romero House; Lakewood Headstart; Black River United Church Cemetery; Salvation Army; Little Darlings Foundation, including one from the management and staff of Bowl-More; NB Heart Centre Foundation; and the Animal Rescue League. A Bible was placed by Outside Workers C.U.P.E. Local No. 18. Following the service, a reception was held in Brenan's Reception Centre, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB. A special thank you is extended to the staff and board of Turnbull Nursing Home.
