VALLIS, CAPTAIN ALLAN C. - Captain Allan Clifford Vallis peacefully at home, 924 Manawagonish Road, on Friday October 10, 2008. Beloved husband of the late Verna M. (Fiander) Vallis. Born in Coomb's Cove, Newfoundland on September 30, 1921 to the late Bertram and Susan (Myles) Vallis. Allan was devoted to his late wife of 58 years and very proud of his sons and grandchildren's accomplishments. Allan began his 50 years of sea life at the age of 12 as a cabin boy on the Grand Bank Schooners. At the age of 26 he became a Master Mariner and captained his first ship at the age of 27. Allan captained oil tankers for 12 years out of Halifax and Saint John and finished his career in 1982 after 22 years as a Harbour Pilot in Saint John during which time Allan and Verna enjoyed a trip to France where Allan gained his knowledge of supertankers. Allan and Verna enjoyed many years of traveling with their great friends Dave and Ruby Morrison and the late Jim and Peggy Kelly throughout the United States and Newfoundland. Many friendships were formed and memories made at Pirate's Cove Trailer Park in Belleisle Bay and playing cards with the St. Ann's and St. Joachim's Seniors group. In July 2007 Allan thoroughly enjoyed a unique trip to Coomb's Cove, Newfoundland to share with his sons and grandchildren their family roots and history. For many years Allan and Verna volunteered their time for "Meals on Wheels" and The Canadian Cancer Society. Allan's keen sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by the many people he met in his lifetime.
