BARRY, M. PATRICIA - Mary Patricia Barry, formerly of Saint John, died at Emmanuel House in Hamilton, ON., Dec 13, 2008. Born in Saint John on Dec. 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late P. Esmonde and Eileen E. (Horgan) Barry. She is survived by a sister, M. Therese Byrne, a brother, Fr. Kevin M. Barry; and sisters-in-law, Maureen Barry of Saint John and Irene Barry of London, ON. She was predeceased by two brothers, J. Esmonde Barry and Gerard A. Barry. A much beloved aunt to several nephews and nieces, all of whom will sadly miss her inclusion in their lives. Also sadly missed by several great nephews and nieces, and many cousins from the Barry ans Horgan families. Following graduation from St. Vincent's Girls High School in Saint John, she pursued nursing studies at the former General Hospital, receiving her R. N. in 1948, nursing locally and then later at Bath, N.B. It was while in Carleton County that she was diagnosed with acute arthritis, which hospitalized her for more than a year. Determined not to allow her arthritis to incapacitate her, she went on to achieve a Bachelor of Nursing degree from McGill, and a Masters of Nursing from Columbia, NY. She subsequently taught at the University of Calgary, later to become Director of Nursing both in Centracare, Saint John and Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, from where she retired. Devotedly committed to her faith, she was chair of the first Parish Council of the Saint John Diocese at St. Pius X in Saint John in 1967, and later was actively involved in a number of ministries associated with St. Margaret Mary Parish in Hamilton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue in Hamilton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Parish, Wednesday, Dec.17 at 9 a.m. A memorial mass will gather family and friends at St. Pius X Church, Saint John, on Tuesday Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Saint John.
