DAVID KENT PLUMMER

PLUMMER, DAVID KENT - the son of the late A. Gordon and Greta E. Plummer died January 8, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital from a heart attack at the age of 85. He was born and raised in St. John, New Brunswick and earned his BSEE (1954) and MSEE (1953) degrees from the University of New Brunswick. Mr. Plummer worked in the Engineering Research and Development field and was a university professor in Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1954, taking out his U.S. citizenship in 1962. He was a color TV Receiver Design and Development Engineer with the Sylvania Electric Products Co, Buffalo, New York, from 1954-1956 and was an Engineering Supervisor at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo, New York from 1956-1976. From 1976-1990, Mr. Plummer worked at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, Atlanta, GA, where he served two terms as an elected member of the Georgia Tech Executive Board. Mr. Plummer was a past member of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers and the Georgia Engineering Foundation. He was a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Senior Emeritus member of the Association of the Sigma Xi. Mr. Plummer played the clarinet by ear and as a college undergraduate, started a band which played 1940's music. He sang with several choirs and was a Messiah Bass Soloist in Deep River, Ontario. Upon retiring in 1990, Mr. Plummer went active with the Marietta "Golden K" Kiwanis, often volunteering for Book Drives and Bell Ringing and procured sponsors for Golf Tournaments. His love of golf found him playing in a Senior Golf Foursome and Kiwanis Golf Group. Mr. Plummer was known for his poems and short stories and shared his gift by writing for family members upon special occasions. In his 80's he attended the E.L.M. class in Photography, Creative Writing, Investments and Woodworking and played Bridge with the Kiwanis. He will be remembered as a loving husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Friend. He is survived by his brother, Arthur G. Plummer of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a sister, Gene C. Moore of Fredericton, New Brunswick as well as his son, Ronald K. Plummer and grandchildren, Tracey and Cameron Plummer of Buffalo, New York, and David Plummer, on deployment in Iraq with the U.S. Army and daughter Susan E. Plummer of Marietta, GA and many nephews and nieces. He is pre-deceased by his parents, his wife, Ruth Plummer and sisters, Ruth F. Church, Margaret V. Nielson, Phyllis M. Thompson and Anita H Diamond. A memorial service honoring his life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of H. M. Patterson and Son, Canton Hill 1157 Old Canton RD, Marietta, GA 30068. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
