KNIGHT, DAINA SAMUEL - On Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 Daina Knight walked gracefully into heaven. Daina, born September 21st, 1926 in Grand Manan, was the proud son of the late Elizabeth (Cheney) and Albert Knight. Daina was the loving and faithful husband of Marjorie (MacArthur) for 55 years and a loving and supportive father to Cheryl (Charlie) Miles, Gary (Anne), Mark and Andrew. He also loved his grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan and Luke Miles, Jennifer, Josh, Ryan and Kevin Knight, and Cole Knight. Daina was the loving brother to Madeline Morse, Kathleen (Galen) Hovey, Dorothy Kilpatrick, Meredith (Keith) McCollum and Edward (Donna) Knight; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His extended family included many students attending UNB and STU, especially international students and their families. Daina grew up in St. John and graduated from St. John High School and Vocational School. He was proud of the time he served in the army. He attended UNB and played goalie for the Red Devils hockey team. In 1954, he moved to Fredericton to join NB Power's Head Office. After 39 years of service, Daina retired in 1987 as the Director of Transportation. He served as the President of NB Power's 25 year club. Throughout his full and active life, he freely shared his faith and wisdom. Some of his church activities included The Atlantic Baptist Convention, Lay Pastor for York Baptist Association and Executive Director of Christian Action Federation. In his home church, he served many years as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Youth Counsellor. Daina remarked that "it was never a sacrifice in serving the Lord" and that "his Best Friend was his Bible". Along with spending time with family and friends, he also loved the cottage, gardening, traveling, boating, inventing, sports and building. Visitation will be at York Funeral Home (302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton) on Sunday, January 25th, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. The funeral service will be held at Greenwood Drive United Baptist Church (150 Greenwood Drive, Fredericton) at 1pm on Monday, January 26th, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, Chalmers Foundation (Oncology), the Christian Children's Fund of Canada or the charity of the donor's choice.
