BRUCE MURRAY FINLEY

FINLEY, BRUCE MURRAY - Bruce Murray Finley passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday February 1, 2009 at York Manor in Fredericton. Born August 29, 1918 in Saint John to Cecil and Ethel (Dunlop), Bruce was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by his parents, sister, Joan (Murray "Nick") Nicholson and brothers, George "Bill" (Helen) of Sussex, and Russ (Eve) of Halifax. He is survived by Louise, his loving wife of 60 years; sons Gregg (Lynda), Scott (Louise), and Dave (Karen) all of Fredericton; grandchildren, Neil, John (Joella), Sarah and Bruce; great-grandson, Maguire; and several nephews and nieces. Bruce was a Saint John furrier most of his working life. Following many years of self employment in the fur business, he managed the fur departments of Manchester Robertson Allison and Calp's in Saint John, and Eastern Furriers in Saint John and Fredericton. Bruce was an active athlete most of his life, involved in competitive speed skating, softball, gymnastics, volleyball and was a member of the Saint John YMCA. He was an avid golfer and maintained a keen interest in his sons' game until the end. Bruce was a man of great wisdom and practical advice, which he readily shared. He also possessed a deep well of integrity and dignity, and was fiercely independent. These are traits, along with his wonderful sense of humour, that helped him to deal with the Parkinson's Disease that gradually robbed him of his physical abilities. These traits endeared him to staff and residents at York Manor, where he spent the past five years. Despite his own difficulties, he was unfailingly kind and considerate of others, and always went out of his way to say a word to other residents who needed it. Family was everything to Bruce, and he and Louise enjoyed a long and happy marriage. Family gatherings were always a time of celebration and fun, and his family will cherish his memory by telling "Bruce" stories for many years to come. Since 2003, Bruce has received outstanding and compassionate care, as well as a healthy dose of teasing and fun from the staff of York Manor, and for this, his family is deeply grateful. Although there will be no visitation by request a Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 11am with Rev. Peter Thomas officiating. Interment will take place at Dayton Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made in Bruce's name to York Manor through the York Foundation or to the Parkinson Society - Maritimes (902-422-3656 or 1-800-663-2468 or http://www.parkinsonmaritimes.ca ).
